#2 「学生時代に先生に言われたかったこと。」の続きです。私は日本の大学4年生を念頭に置いてこれをタイプしていますが、核となるコンセプトは実質的に誰にでも当てはまります。また、このブログシリーズは、キャリアや卒業後の問題に魔法のような答えを与えることを意図していないことを心に留めておいてください。このブログの目的は、あなたが考えもしなかったような状況に置かれ、その過程で、あなた自身の解決策を見つけることを奨励することです。人それぞれ価値観もニーズも欲求も違うので、答えは一つではありません。しかし、正直に言うと、この地球上のほとんどの人が必要としている共通のものがあり、それはお金です。では、はじめましょう。

あなたはどちらでしょうか？ (1)働くために生きている会社に仕えることが人生の目標。 (2)生きるために働いている。働く理由は、お金を得て、人生を楽しむため。 (1)を選んだ方は、該当するインスタグラムの投稿で理由を教えていただけると幸いです。今回は、「自分の人生を楽しむ」という部分にフォーカスしてみましょう。

ディズニーランド、パリ、バリ、キャンプ、グランピング……と目的地を決めてから、行き方、費用、ホテルなどを考えますよね。もちろん、お金が決め手になるのは言うまでもありません。このブログの文脈では、あなたはどんなライフスタイル（目的地）を求めているのでしょうか？そこへ行く方法（仕事）を考える前に、まず自分に問うべきことかもしれません。

あなたの人生のゴールは何でしょうか？大きな家に住みたいのか、小さな家に住みたいのか。高級ブランドの服を着たいのか、ユニクロやGAPのような安くて機能的なブランドで十分なのか。飛行機では、エコノミークラスでみんなと一緒でいいのか、それともビジネスクラスで離陸前に軽くシャンパンを飲みたいのか？きっと、あなたはこれらの質問に答えられるはずです。

目を丸くしている人たちのために、明白なことを指摘しておこう。確かに、生まれながらにして裕福な人もいれば、経済的、政治的に自分ではどうしようもない不運な境遇にある人もいます。そう、お金持ちでも贅沢を気にする人／気にしない人がいる。その逆もしかり。そして、人生というゲームに足を踏み入れた後、「お金は重要ではない」という若い頃の理想的な価値観を捨ててしまう人もいるのです。

人によっては、もう答えは明らかです。 “貧乏になりたいんじゃない。金持ちになりたいんだ” あるいは、”大人になってからより良い生活をしたい”。なんですって！？ビジネスクラスに座ったことがないのか？無理もない。人生には経験したことのないことがたくさんあります。だからこそ、もう少し人生を探求してからでないと、どのようなキャリアを追求するかを決めるのは早すぎると、前回の記事で述べたのです。

どんなライフスタイルを希望するにしても、一番大事なのは目的地が決まっていることで、人生に迷いがないことです。問題は、そのライフスタイルを実現する方法です。

何を言っているのかわからない人は、友達3人とレストランに行ってみてください。会計のとき、あなたはどうしますか？ a) 費用を均等に分けますか（それぞれが異なる商品を注文し、費用も異なるにもかかわらず）、b) 自分が食べた分の費用を各自支払いますか、c) 経済的余裕があるので、友人に素晴らしいディナーをご馳走しますか？この段階で、何を言っているのか分かると思います。

また、年齢を重ね、家族を持つことになれば、必要なライフスタイルも変わり、経済的なニーズも変化することを理解しておく必要があります。

個人的には、ビジネスクラスで世界一周したり、50ccのバイクで東京からイスタンブールまで旅行したり（私の情熱のひとつです）、死ぬまでにエベレストに登りたいですが、これらの活動はあまりにも高価なので、自分のライフスタイルプランを見直したり、人生で望むことに合わせて収入を増やす必要があるかもしれません。また、自分のライフスタイルの目的地に到達するためには、生活の中で難しい調整をしたり、新しいスキルを身につけたりする必要があるのかもしれません。

念のため言っておきますが、上記はライフスタイルの選択についてです。 AかBを選ぶ。レンジャー・ローバー対ダイハツ。都心のオシャレな場所にある家vs線路脇のローコスト住宅。

さて、こんな仮想のシナリオを想像してみてください。

ある日、医師から、あなたのお子さんが珍しい病気にかかったと告げられます。治療費は非常に高額で、十分な資金がありません。翌週には、自宅の冷蔵庫から水漏れが発生し、交換が必要になりました。さらに悪いことに、癌と闘っていた祖母が亡くなり、あなたを含む勤労者家族全員が葬儀の費用を拠出することになりました。

このシナリオは仮定の話ですが、要は、人々の選択肢はほとんどなく、非常に制約されているということです。飛行機の座席と葬儀はどのようにつながっているのでしょうか。最終的には、自分の経済的な安定を考える必要があります。平均的だが安定した、公務員の仕事で十分なのか、それとも人生の苦難に備え、なおかつ最新のiPhoneを手に入れられるだけの銀行預金がある、高収入の仕事がいいのか？人生には、選べるものと選べないものがあります。

だから、仕事を決める前に、自分が求めるライフスタイルのコストと、これから経験するであろう人生の経済的現実について考えるべきだろう。

子ども向けに書かれた「こども手に職図鑑」という本を見てください。おそらく出版社が、子供たちにどんな仕事があり、どれくらいの収入があるのかを理解させたいと考えている親をターゲットに開発した本でしょう。 #3につづく

#2 This is the continuation of ”Things I Wish My Professors Had Told Me When I Was a Student.” I am typing this with a 4th year Japanese university student in mind, however, the core concept could apply to practically anyone. Also, please keep in mind that this blog series is not meant to give magical answers to career and post-graduation problems. The aim is to put you in a situation that you may not have thought about and in the process, encourage you to find your own solutions. Everyone has different values, needs and wants, so there is no one answer. However, let’s be honest, there is one common thing that most people on this planet need and that is money. Let’s begin.

Which one are you?

(1) I live to work. The goal in life is to serve a company.

(2) I work to live. The reason I work is to get money and enjoy my life.

If you choose (1), I’d be very interested to hear your reasons on the corresponding Instagram post. For our purpose, let’s focus on the “enjoy my life” part.

Usually, whenever you go on a vacation, you decide on your destination first; Disneyland, a week in Paris, Bali, camping or glamping, then you figure out about how to get there, the costs, hotels, etc. Needless to say, money will dictate your decision-making. For this blog entry’s context, what kind of lifestyle (destination) do you want? Perhaps this is what you need to ask yourself first, before figuring out how to get there (your job).

What are you goals in life? Do you want to live in a big or small house? Do you want to wear luxury brand clothes or are inexpensive yet functional brands like UNIQLO or GAP enough for you? In an airplane, are you okay to sit in economy class with everyone else, or do you need that quick glass of champagne before take off in business class? Surely, you can answer these questions.

Let me just point out the obvious for the people rolling their eyes. Yes, there are people born into wealth or unfortunate economical, political circumstances beyond their control. Yes, there are people who are rich people who care / don’t care about luxury. And vice versa. And then there are the people who abandon their young, idealistic values that “money isn’t important” after they have stepped into the game called life.

For some people, the answer is already clear. “I don’t want to be poor. I want to be rich.” Or “I want a better life than when I was growing up.” What?! You’ve never sat in business class? Understandable. There are many things in life which you have not experienced which is why I mentioned in my previous post that I think it’s too early for you to decide on what type of career pursue until you have explored life a bit more.

Whatever lifestyle you hope for, the most important point is that you have destination on mind, so you’re not completely lost in life. The problem is how to achieve that lifestyle.

For those who do not understand what I’m discussing, try going to a restaurant with three of your friends. What do you when you get the bill? a) Do you divide the costs evenly (despite the fact each of you ordered different items with different costs); b) each person pays for what you ate for; c) do you treat your friends to a wonderful dinner because you have the financial means to do so? I think you know what I’m talking about at this stage.

You should also understand that as you get older, and if you decide to have a family, your lifestyle requirements will change, and so will your financial needs.

Personally, I would love to travel around the world in business class, travel from Tokyo to Istanbul on a 50cc motorcycle (one of my passions), or climb Mt. Everest before I die, but these activities may be too expensive, so I may need to reassess my lifestyle plans or increase my income to fit what I want in life. Perhaps you also need to make some difficult adjustments in your life or learn new skills to reach your lifestyle destination.

In case you haven’t noticed, the above is about lifestyle choice. Pick A or B. Ranger Rover vs Daihatsu. A house in a fashionable part of the city vs low-cost housing next to a railroad track.

Now, imagine this hypothetical scenario:

One day, the doctor informs you that your child is seriously ill with a rare disease. The medical treatment is very expensive, and you don’t have the sufficient funds for the treatment. The following week, the refrigerator in your home is leaking water and needs to be replaced. To make things worse, your grandmother who had been battling cancer passes away and all working family members (including you) are expected to contribute to the funeral service.

Although this scenario is hypothetical, the point is that people’s choices are very constrained with little to no choice. How is this connected to where to sit in an airplane and funeral services? Ultimately, you need to think about your financial security. Will that average but stable, public servant job be enough or do you want a high-paying job that will prepare you for the hardships of life and still have enough in the bank to get that latest iPhone? There are somethings in life that we can choose, and somethings we can’t.

So, before deciding on your job, perhaps you ought to think about the costs of lifestyle you want AND the financial realities of life that you will undoubtedly experience.

Take a look at this book, こども手に職図鑑 written for children. It was probably developed by publishers to target parents who want their kids to understand about the type of jobs available and how much money they earn.
